doc. Ing. et Ing. Martin Novák, Ph.D.

Associate Professor at the Department of Instrumentation and Control Engineering, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering Czech Technical University in Prague.

I work on power electronics and the control of electrical machines — mainly where speed, efficiency or size reach the limits of what standard engineering can handle. I design converters using SiC and GaN transistors, control algorithms for high-speed synchronous machines, and the measurement setups needed to verify them. Alongside research, I teach technical measurement, sensor systems and rapid prototyping.

I speak Czech, English, French and German.

Research profiles

Research

Control of high-speed synchronous machines

Sensorless control of permanent magnet synchronous motors at speeds up to 250,000 rpm. I work on rotor position estimation using adaptive phase-locked loops, online identification of machine parameters and stability analysis of the feedback loop. Designs are validated on in-house test rigs, not only in simulation.

SiC and GaN power electronics

Design and measurement of converters based on silicon carbide and gallium nitride transistors — from three-phase inverters for drives to bidirectional dual and triple active bridge DC/DC converters. My focus is efficiency, electromagnetic compatibility and how fast switching affects the rest of the system. Current work targets converters for heat pumps and residential energy storage.

Electric and hydrogen vehicle drivetrains

Drivetrain models for urban buses, both battery-electric and fuel-cell powered. I compute traction motor efficiency maps from a limited number of measured points, model 18650 and LTO cells from long-term testing, and look for where energy can be saved over a drive cycle. The results came out of two projects with industrial partners.

Sensors and measurement technology

Tactile sensing and evaluation circuits for variable-resistance sensors — an area covered by my patents in Czechia, Europe and Russia, and the origin of the Plantograf family of pressure distribution sensors. Alongside it, teaching and demonstration hardware: laser range finders, LIDAR and a flying sensor platform. I summarised the field in a book published by CRC Press.

Evidence: CRC Press 2020; EP 2414799 B1; RU 2538038; CZ 301690; CZ 301717; ICIT 2021; IMEKO 2009/2012

Mechatronics and additive manufacturing

Where 3D printing meets electrical machines and control. We print parts of electrical machines, detect printing defects from cameras and sensors with real-time evaluation, and build devices such as a prosthetic hand modelled on human hand anatomy or an active magnetic bearing. Most of these topics run as student and doctoral projects.

Complete list

The complete list, including Czech-language output, patents, functional samples and software, is maintained in V3S CTU — 144 publications, updated through 2026. ORCID holds a selection of 75 records focused on international output; it does not include textbooks or Czech-language periodicals. Both lists are valid, they simply have a different scope.

Book

Cover of the book Introduction to Sensors for Electrical and Mechanical Engineers

In 2020 CRC Press (Taylor & Francis Group) published my book Introduction to Sensors for Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. It walks the reader through selecting and applying sensors in engineering practice — from the measuring principle to wiring and signal processing. It is written for students and for engineers who need to choose a sensor and get it working, not merely describe it.

What I enjoy

Beyond engineering and research, I enjoy continually improving my presentation and communication skills. I have experience in theatre and I work on voice, expression and interaction with the audience. I am particularly interested in how to explain complex technical topics in a clear and engaging way to students, experts and the general public.

I regularly invest time in developing my public speaking, rhetoric and stage presence, because I believe that a good engineer should not only design systems, but also be able to communicate ideas effectively in different contexts.
